The Subconscious Mind Explained: Why Your Beliefs Run Your Habits

You decide to get up earlier, speak up in meetings or stop reaching for your phone at midnight. For a few days it works, and then the old pattern returns as if you had never decided anything. This is where the subconscious mind explained in simple terms becomes useful. A great deal of daily behaviour is driven by beliefs and habits you are not actively thinking about.

This guide covers what people usually mean by the subconscious, how beliefs and habits are connected, and how Soulful by Lorena approaches it. Lorena is a certified ThetaHealing practitioner and Spiritual Coach, based in Tirana, who works online with people worldwide.

In short

  • The subconscious is the part of your mind that runs beliefs, reactions and routines without you consciously choosing them.
  • Habits tend to follow beliefs. If you believe "I always fail", your actions will quietly arrange themselves to match.
  • That is why willpower alone often fades: it works against the belief rather than with it.
  • In ThetaHealing, the aim is to reach the belief in a relaxed theta state and, with your permission, replace it.
  • This is a spiritual and coaching practice that complements, and never replaces, professional medical or mental-health care.

The subconscious mind explained simply

Think of your mind as having two layers. The conscious layer is what you are aware of: the thoughts you can put into words, the decisions you make on purpose. The subconscious is everything running underneath, such as the automatic reactions, the learned assumptions and the routines you perform without thinking.

Most people have a feel for this already. You can drive a familiar route and arrive with no memory of the turns. You can feel a flash of dread at a message from a certain person before you have read a word. Neither was a conscious decision.

It is worth being honest about the language. "The subconscious" is a popular term rather than a precise scientific one, and psychologists describe automatic processing in several different ways. In ThetaHealing, the idea is that beliefs held at this deeper level can be reached through guided meditation, and this is the practice's own framework. It is not presented here as settled science.

How beliefs and habits are connected

A belief is a conclusion your mind holds as true. A habit is a behaviour repeated until it is automatic. The link between them is simple: you tend to act in line with what you believe about yourself and the world.

Consider a few chains:

  • Belief: "I am not a disciplined person." Habit: abandoning plans the first time they get difficult, which seems to confirm the belief.
  • Belief: "It is not safe to be seen." Habit: staying quiet in meetings, deflecting compliments, declining opportunities.
  • Belief: "There is never enough." Habit: overworking, overspending, or never quite relaxing around money.
  • Belief: "I have to keep everyone happy." Habit: saying yes to everything and feeling resentful later.

Notice the loop. The belief produces the habit, the habit produces results, and the results appear to prove the belief. It can run for years without anyone asking whether the original conclusion was ever true. For more on how this shows up in daily life, see five signs a limiting belief is running your life.

Why willpower often runs out

Willpower is a conscious tool. It is useful, but it asks you to push against an automatic system every single day. When you are tired, stressed or distracted, the automatic system wins.

If a deep belief says "I do not deserve rest", you can schedule a break and still feel too guilty to take it. You are not weak. You are in disagreement with yourself, and the quieter side has been practising for much longer.

This is a theme Lorena meets often. If it sounds familiar, why willpower isn't enough goes deeper into the experience of trying hard and getting nowhere.

Where subconscious beliefs come from

Most are formed early, before we have the tools to question them. A child watches how adults handle money, conflict, failure and affection, and draws conclusions. Later, school, culture and relationships add more. By adulthood the conclusions feel like personality: "I am just not a morning person", "I am just bad at relationships".

Some beliefs are inherited almost whole from the family. If you want to explore that angle, read about family patterns and relationships.

What the theta state has to do with it

Brainwaves are patterns of electrical activity in the brain. Theta waves, roughly 4 to 8 Hz, are generally linked with deep relaxation, meditation and the drowsy edge of sleep. That much is a general fact.

ThetaHealing builds on it. In the ThetaHealing framework, a guided meditation brings you into this relaxed state while you stay awake, and from there the subconscious roots of a pattern are easier to see. The practice then offers a way to release the old belief and install a new one. Whether you find that model convincing or simply interesting, the experience for most people is of calm focus and honest self-observation.

What working with the subconscious looks like in a session

A ThetaHealing session with Lorena lasts 75 minutes on Zoom and has four parts.

  1. We talk. You describe what you want to shift: a fear, a pattern, a block. No preparation is needed.
  2. We go deep. A gentle meditation brings you into the theta state, where the subconscious root of the pattern can show itself.
  3. We release. With your permission, the limiting belief is released and replaced with one that serves the life you want.
  4. We integrate. You leave with clarity and simple practices to anchor the shift in daily life.

Three things stay constant. You remain aware and in control. Nothing is changed without your explicit permission. And the pace is yours: the work is gentle, confidential and free of judgement.

Making the new belief stick

A new belief needs reinforcement in daily life, otherwise old routines can pull you back. This is why Lorena pairs release with creation. After ThetaHealing loosens an old belief, spiritual coaching helps you decide what to do with the space: clarify your vision, find where habits still contradict it, and take concrete steps with accountability between sessions.

You can start noticing on your own today:

  • Write down one habit you keep failing to change.
  • Ask what you would have to believe about yourself for that habit to make sense.
  • Write the answer as a plain sentence, then ask whether you chose to believe it.

A gentle safety note

Habits and beliefs can be tangled up with anxiety, low mood, addiction or trauma. ThetaHealing does not replace therapy, diagnosis, medication or medical care, and it should not be used as a substitute. If you are struggling, please talk to your doctor or a qualified mental-health professional first, and if you are in crisis, contact your local emergency services straight away.

Frequently asked questions

Can you really change the subconscious mind?

Beliefs are learned, so most people accept that they can be unlearned or updated, although there are many views on how best to do it. ThetaHealing offers one approach, built on guided meditation and consent. Lorena does not promise results, but many clients describe feeling lighter afterwards.

What is the difference between the conscious and subconscious mind?

The conscious mind handles what you are actively aware of and decide on purpose. The subconscious is a popular term for the automatic layer: habits, learned assumptions and emotional reactions. The boundary is not sharply defined, and the terms are used loosely.

How do I reprogram my subconscious mind?

People use many methods, including meditation, journaling, therapy and coaching. In a ThetaHealing session, the aim is to find a specific belief, release it with your permission and replace it with a supportive one. Daily practices afterwards help anchor the change.

Is ThetaHealing hypnosis?

No. You stay awake, aware and in control, and you can ask questions or stop at any time. It is a guided meditation combined with conversation.

Do I have to believe this for it to work?

No. ThetaHealing is not a religion, and sceptics are welcome. You do not need to believe in anything to try a session.
